The 4th of October 2017
will mark the 100th birthday of legendary composer and
singer Violeta Parra. To commemorate this milestone, Chile will honour
Parra’s works through exhibitions, concerts and documentaries dedicated
to her music, such as the iconic song Gracias a La Vida (Thanks to
Life). Beginning the 4th of October 2016, there will also be
a scholarly focus on Parra’s work, with academics such as Paula Miranda
studying the poetic expression in her songs. The Minister for Culture
Ernesto Otto Ramírez has especially pushed for ‘the citizenry,
especially the new generation’ to become familiar with this thinker,
artist and prolific writer and for ‘all the Violetas’ who proudly
represent the name of Chile.
The Ministry of Culture and the Violeta Parra Foundation have
collaborated on a program of more than 300 activities in order to
celebrate the 100th birthday of Violeta Parra. This program
commenced on the 4th of October 2016, coinciding with the
first anniversary of the Violetta Parra Museum and the commemoration of
the Day of Chilean Music. For instance, the month of April will see a
contest of letters amongst students in the Biobio region in order to
promote intergenerational dialogue about the life and creative works of
the artist, organized by the Fernando Gonzalez Urizar Cultural Centre.
Learn about the life
